    Process Requirements Based on Steel Pipe Application

    Casing, tubing, drill pipe, and line pipe in oilfield-specific pipes

    According to the steel grade, the corresponding processes of normalizing, normalizing plus tempering, and quenching plus tempering (tempering) are adopted.

    High-pressure boiler tubes, high-pressure fertilizer tubes

    Generally, normalizing, normalizing plus tempering, quenching plus tempering, and solution treatment of austenitic stainless steel pipes are used.

    Basis of Steel Pipe Heat Treatment Process

    According to the standards and performance requirements of the steel pipe, determine which process to use, namely normalizing, quenching, tempering, and annealing. Then, determine the process parameters according to the steel grade of the steel pipe, such as process temperature, holding time, and cooling method.

    Full Quenching

    Casing, tubing, drill pipe, and line pipe in oilfield-specific pipes are generally made of alloy structural steel, which is hypoeutectoid steel. In order to improve the hardenability of the steel and reduce the heating time, Ac3+50℃ is used as the austenitizing temperature of the steel pipe, which is the heating temperature for full quenching.

    High Temperature Tempering

    High-grade steel pipe products require quenching and high-temperature tempering to obtain tempered sorbite microstructure and good comprehensive performance combination. The purpose of quenching is to obtain martensite microstructure. However, in actual production, it is difficult to obtain 100% martensite. In this way, uniform sorbite can be obtained after high-temperature tempering. This is very important for high-strength, high-toughness, and H2S stress corrosion resistant steel grades.
